Jamaica

Couples Negril

Pros

  • Beachfront location on Bloody Bay
  • Chic pool, 2 Jacuzzis, and a swim-up bar
  • 5 resturants with food served around the clock
  • All-inclusive rates include premium-brand liquor, unlimited golf, water sports(even scuba diving), off-site excursions, and airport transfers
  • Fitness center, tennis courts, basketball courts, and aerobics studio
  • Lagoon spa with tree house treatment rooms
  • Modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and flat-screen TVs
  • No children under 18 allowed
  • Free Wi-Fi and parking

Cons

  • Some rooms have lack views
  • No elevators
  • A bit removed from the main action in Negril

Bottom Line

This 234-room beach resort delivers more than the free meals and cheap booze of the typical all-inclusive; offerings include top-shelf liquor, unlimited golf, water sports and excursions, airport transfers and minibars that are re-stocked daily. It's a bit less crowded, and often cheaper, than its sister property Couples Swept Away. Rooms here are arguably nicer as well, though some may find Bloody Bay location less appealing than Swept Away's location on Seven Mile Beach.

Couples Swept Away

Pros

  • One of Jamaica's best beaches--Negril's Seven Mile Beach
  • Varied, high-quality food(even at 4 a.m.)
  • Name-brand liquor included at no extra fee
  • 10 tennis courts, lap pool, aerobics studio, and gym on-site
  • Full-service spa
  • Modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and flat-screen TVs

Cons

  • Less exciting nightlife--mostly just a piano bar for sing-alongs
  • Traffic audible in some rooms
  • Small pools with no activities
  • Outdoor gym facilities make working out unpleasantly sweaty

Bottom Line

Restricted to couples ages 18 and up, this large (though quiet) 312-room all-inclusive is on one of Jamaica's best beaches. Modern rooms with Wi-Fi and iPod docks, quality food, and a low-key atmosphere.

Bahamas

Sandals Emerald Bay

Pros

  • Beachfront resort on gorgeous Emerald Bay
  • Spacious rooms, many with private pools and some on the beach
  • Seven on-site restaurants from French cafes to Italian fine dining
  • 18-hole golf course with golf carts and clubs to rent
  • Three pools, pool bar, and several ‘quiet’ pools throughout the resort
  • Fitness center with modern cardio equipment and yoga studio
  • Red Lane Spa features massages, skin therapy, and peels
  • Round-trip airport shuttle to Exuma International Airport
  • Dive Center and PADI-certification for a fee
  • Nice extras of conference rooms, tennis courts, and zen gardens
  • Free welcome drink in the Sandals club lounge
  • Free basic Wi-Fi throughout the resort

Cons

  • Rooms near entertainment can be noisy
  • Unlimited scuba diving for PADI-certified guests only

Bottom Line

The 249-room, all-inclusive Sandals Emerald Bay is a luxury resort with 500 acres of gorgeous landscaped grounds on Great Exuma Island. This adult-only resort has handsome, spacious rooms, many of which are right on the resort's white sand beach. In-room amenities include HD smart TVs, minibars, and MP3 soundsystems. Given its size, it's not surprising that there are multiple pools and restaurants on-site, but the resort also includes tennis courts, a golf course, quiet areas, and a spa. With romantic fire pits, quiet pools, activities like diving, and entertainment, the resort is ideal for singles and couple.

Sandals Royal Bahamian

Pros

  • Romantic and fun all-inclusive adults-only resort with neat history
  • Great location on the beach, within easy reach of the airport
  • Vast variety of room type options
  • Relaxing offshore island (via a free ferry) for daytrips
  • Two 24-hour large pools next to the beach with swim-up bars
  • Elegant furnishings, canopy beds, and stocked minibars in rooms
  • 10 dining options, room service (for most), and eight bars with premium alcohol
  • Most restaurants don’t require reservations
  • Fire-pits, a piano bar, and a late-night pub offer a range in the way of nightlife
  • Plenty of land and water activities, and special events on a daily basis
  • Red Lane spa on-site for indoor/outdoor treatments
  • Top-notch butler service that many find worth the splurge
  • Butler level guests receive transportation via Rolls Royce or Mercedes Benz

Cons

  • Not the biggest beach area; chairs with umbrellas are limited
  • Minibars in the rooms have plenty of beverages but no snacks
  • Ordering room service could require several dial attempts
  • Some restaurants require reservations which can be hard to snag
  • Windsor Tower rooms are more likely to experience late-night noise
  • Connecting to Wi-Fi can be a challenge

Bottom Line

What was once known as the famous Balmoral Club back in the 1940s later became the 408-room Sandals Resort in 1995, where the motto is "Love is all you need." This resort has everything designed for couples and manages to impress upon arrival with Roman columns, statues, fountains, three levels of elegant accommodations, 10 distinct restaurants, and eight bars. Guests receive a slew of information at onset, including a schedule of both land and water activities and daily events, but many choose to relax at the beach or make use of one of two main pool bars to drink and mingle. Head to the offshore island for an easy excursion -– a boat leaves every hour and there’s a Jamaican restaurant (included) and cabanas for napping.

Barbados

Sandals Barbados

Pros

  • Three pools, including the largest river-style pool in the Caribbean
  • 13 restaurants and seven bars, including one with swim-up access
  • Numerous outdoor spaces for lounging and socializing
  • Scheduled theme nights with live entertainment, chocolate buffets, and reggae
  • Numerous water sports including unlimited SCUBA for certified divers
  • Beautifully manicured grounds with colorful flowering plants and palms
  • Some rooms with butler service, 24-hour room service, and freestanding terrace soaking tubs
  • Walking distance to the nightlife of St. Lawrence Gap
  • Close to the international airport
  • A departure lounge with showers and changing rooms
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Proliferation of odorous seaweed on the beach can be unpleasant
  • Noise from nearby construction may be bothersome
  • Lounge chairs around the oceanfront pool can be difficult to find
  • The oceanfront pool can become crowded and noisy with partying guests
  • Poolside cabanas require an additional fee
  • The gym is small for the size of the property

Bottom Line

Set on a private stretch of Dover Beach on the island's southwest coast, the lushly landscaped, couples-only Sandals Barbados is an upscale, all-inclusive resort. Some of the hotel's 280 rooms offer swim-out access into a river-style pool, or terraces with free-standing soaking tubs. The resort's three pools, 13 restaurants, bars, spa, and numerous recreational amenities make for plenty to do on property, but those needing an escape can easily access the nightlife of nearby St. Lawrence Gap. The hotel also boasts a manicured stretch of breezy white-sand beach lined with rows of cushy loungers.

Dominican Republic

Sanctuary Cap Cana By AlSol

Pros

  • Resembles a Spanish castle and has a stunning cliffside location
  • Gorgeous rustic-chic rooms, all with outdoor space and some with ocean views
  • Excellent white-sand beach
  • Six pools, including one with a swim-up bar, and poolside service
  • Buffet, Asian, Italian, and steakhouse restaurant options; 24-hour room service
  • Oceanfront, thatched-roof seafood restaurant, Blue Marlin
  • Extensive spa area with its own juice bar, massage cabanas, and private pool
  • Free transportation to nearby Punta Espada, a renowned par 72, 18-hole golf course
  • 15-minute taxi ride from Punta Cana International Airport
  • Adult-only as of Dec. 2015 (con for some)

Cons

  • Far from the rest of Punta Cana; no nearby activities or dining
  • Several elevators out of order during our visit
  • Fee for in-room Wi-Fi

Bottom Line

This 174-room romantic all-inclusive luxury resort looks like a Spanish castle town and is perched on a cliff by the ocean in the still developing Cap Cana complex, near the airport but a bit far from the main resort area. Its beautifully decorated pools, spa, and restaurants are all among the D.R.'s best; in this area, the similarly priced Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is one of only a handful of resorts that can compare.

The Royal Suites Turquesa by Palladium

Pros

  • Private area of Bavaro Beach with daybeds
  • Classy rooms with sofa beds and jetted tubs; swim-up suites available
  • Drink service at the beach and pool
  • Peaceful pool areas with a swim-up bar
  • Two separate a la carte restaurants for this section only
  • Access to three other resorts for more bars, dining, and activities
  • Pretty canopy-style beds with mosquito nets
  • 24-hour room service and private delivery areas in the rooms
  • Butler service for each block of rooms
  • Free fitness center, tennis courts, and access to a spa
  • Cheerful lobby with a bar and nice seating areas
  • Limitless beach towels for guests (no towel cards!)
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Cyclinder-style shower stalls in some rooms are not for the claustrophobic
  • Some inconsistency with food quality and service at the restaurants
  • Guests might need to ask for alcohol in their drinks
  • Some buildings are a bit of a hike to the beach
  • Expect long walks (or a shuttle that fills up quickly) for access to other resorts
  • Staff may push spa treatments or excursions
  • Daybeds and shaded areas tend to get snatched before sunrise

Bottom Line

With 372 rooms, Royal Turquesa is the more expensive, adults-only section of the massive all-inclusive Palladium complex, and has a more peaceful setting than its three neighbors. Notable aspects here include the swim-up suites and a prime stretch of private beach dotted with lounge chairs, hammocks, and daybeds. The main pool is smack in the center of the resort and has built-in lounge chairs and a swim-up bar. Rooms options come in seven spacious types, all with canopy beds, stocked minibars (soda, water, beer, and liquor), DVD players, sofa beds, and jetted tubs. There is premium liquor at the bars, and two restaurants (including a romantic French option) are exclusive to this section only; guests can also access the wide selection of bars, restaurants, and activities at the three sister properties, though they're a long walk or crowded shuttle ride away.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana

Pros

  • Uncrowded private beach
  • Unlimited top-shelf liquor and gourmet dining at the resort’s four restaurants
  • Spacious rooms feature sleek bathrooms with double vanities and luxury toiletries
  • All rooms have large flat-screen TVs with DVD players, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi
  • Pristine main pool with a swim-up bar
  • Free on-site activities include yoga, snorkeling, and one horseback riding session
  • One 20-minute massage included
  • Gorgeous spa is one of the D.R.’s best

Cons

  • Remote location is a bit difficult to reach
  • No kids’ club

Bottom Line

The 96-room Zoetry Agua is one of the most luxurious and tranquil all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. Catering towards couples, the resort boasts an uncrowded white-sand beach, sleek, spacious suites, a pristine pool, and one of the Dominican Republic’s top spas. Included amenities -- yoga classes, laundry services, top-shelf liquor, and even a horseback riding session -- are plentiful, but a difficult-to-reach location and no kids’ club make it less suited for families. But that’s just what makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a romantic and relaxing getaway.

Aruba

Hotel Riu Palace Antillas

Pros

  • All-inclusive resort on Palm Beach, near shopping, dining, and nightlife
  • Modern rooms with ready-to-pour liquor racks and minibars
  • All rooms have balconies, some with sea views
  • Massive pool with poolside and swim-up Aqua Bar
  • Small casino and PACHA nightclub plus nightly entertainment
  • Beauty salon and spa -- treatment rooms have garden views
  • Bright fitness center with modern equipment and lots of free weights
  • Four specialty restaurants plus buffet restaurant and four bars
  • Rooms service available around the clock
  • Plenty of non-motorized water activities by day
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout

Cons

  • Casino allows smoking inside (pro for some)
  • Style throughout is a bit underwhelming
  • Limited amount of beach chairs

Bottom Line

The four-pearl Hotel Riu Palace Antillas is a 481-room, all-inclusive, adult-only resort that's right on popular Palm Beach. The atmosphere is booze-fueled and lively. Rooms are simple and modern, and some have ocean views. Flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and the all-important ready-to-pour liquor rack all come standard. The four restaurants and bars (including a swim-up pool bar) help keep guests busy, but nightly entertainment at the nightclub and casino are lacking. Still, for Riu brand loyalists things here feel fresh, which can't always be said for resorts in Aruba, and service is available around the clock.
