Sandals Halcyon Beach, St. Lucia

Pros

  • Intimate property with low-rise buildings and a French-Caribbean style
  • Beautifully landscaped grounds with mature trees and flowering hedgerows
  • Two pools, both with swim-up bars
  • Lots of outdoor lounge space -- fire pits, gazebos, and day beds
  • Six restaurants, including Kelly's Dockside, set on a pier over the water
  • Club Sandals level rooms have access to a 24-hour lounge with concierge and room service
  • Butler service available with selected rooms
  • Guests can access amenities at two other Sandals Resorts
  • All water sports (including scuba for certified divers) are included in the all-inclusive rates
  • Free Wi-Fi for those staying in Concierge- and Butler-level rooms

Cons

  • The resort is located close to a busy road, and in some areas you can hear the traffic
  • The shuttle bus that travels between the three resorts tends to run late
  • Stray cats wandering in the restaurants may be bothersome
  • Solicitors on the beach may be a nuisance
  • The resort is in need of some updating, especially in the guest room bathrooms
  • The resort is quieter, with fewer activities, than the other two Sandals resorts on St. Lucia
  • It's a one-hour drive from the international airport
  • Rooms close to the pool may receive more noise due to partying guests and music • No on-site spa, but guests can arrange oceanfront massages (and can access spa at sister resort) • There is a charge for Wi-Fi for guests not in Concierge- or Butler-level rooms

Bottom Line
The smallest and least expensive of the three Sandals Resorts on St. Lucia, Halcyon is also quieter and more intimate. The 169-room all-inclusive resort features low-rise French-Caribbean style buildings with exposed stone walls and white shuttered windows. The rooms are not huge, but they are stylish, cozy nests for honeymooners and couples. The lushly landscaped grounds offer plenty of opportunity for wandering and lounging in oversized daybeds, on swinging benches, in oceanfront whirlpools, and on sofas set around fire pits overlooking the Caribbean.

Cons

Bottom Line
For travelers seeking a large all-inclusive with plenty of activities and amenities, and a laid-back, easygoing vibe, Sandals Negril is a great choice. Located along the largest private stretch of Negril’s beautiful Seven Mile Beach, the resort is spacious and luxurious, with open-air dining, a variety of water and land sports, and enough entertainment and relaxation options to keep guests happy and relaxed. The resort is a bit removed from the larger strip of hotels and cottages along the highway, but is still close enough to popular local attractions and shops to give guests looking to explore the area easy access to the downtown area.

Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, Jamaica

Pros

  • Largest Sandals resort in Jamaica on a large private beach near downtown Ocho Rios
  • Romantic, adults-only property
  • Spacious, upscale rooms, some with ocean views and some with butler service
  • All-inclusive rates cover unlimited food at 15 restaurants, room service, and free alcohol
  • Tips prohibited (except for butlers)
  • Multiple public outdoor pools, including some with swim-up bars
  • Free golf course privileges
  • Red Lane Spa offers beach massages
  • Unlimited scuba diving for certified divers
  • Water sports such as kayaking, snorkeling, and sailing
  • Evening entertainment and theme parties
  • Free shuttle to the airport in Montego Bay
  • Tennis courts and an adequate fitness center

Cons

  • Property is on two sides of the street, making it confusing to navigate
  • Only Club Level rooms have free Wi-Fi
  • Long hour-and-a-half drive from the airport
  • Extra fee for spa access and to rent a pool cabana
  • Required caddy at the golf course costs extra
  • Small beach for size of property

Bottom Line
This large, 529-room upscale all-inclusive is adults-only, drawing many younger couples and honeymooners. The sprawling, 110-acre resort is split into two halves by the road, and jitneys run between the two lobbies regularly. The Riviera Seaside Village and Ochi Beach Club are both on the water, while the All-Butler Riviera Villas and Great House are set back in the gardens, and offer butler service. There are lots of restaurants, bars, pools, whirlpools, and activities (including an 18-hole golf course) on the premises, and it's a five-minute drive to downtown Ocho Rios for more spots to shop and dine. Just know that the beach isn't large and the hotel is an hour-and-a-half ride from the airport on the resort's free shuttle bus; those who prefer less travel time may want to compare rates at the smaller Sandals Montego Bay, and those in search of a better beach may want to consider the Sandals Negril Beach Resort.

Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island, Bahamas

Pros

  • Romantic and fun all-inclusive adults-only resort with neat history
  • Great location on the beach, within easy reach of the airport
  • Vast variety of room type options
  • Relaxing offshore island (via a free ferry) for daytrips
  • Two 24-hour large pools next to the beach with swim-up bars
  • Elegant furnishings, canopy beds, and stocked minibars in rooms
  • 10 dining options, room service (for most), and eight bars with premium alcohol
  • Most restaurants don’t require reservations
  • Fire-pits, a piano bar, and a late-night pub offer a range in the way of nightlife
  • Plenty of land and water activities, and special events on a daily basis
  • Red Lane spa on-site for indoor/outdoor treatments
  • Top-notch butler service that many find worth the splurge
  • Butler level guests receive transportation via Rolls Royce or Mercedes Benz

Cons

  • Not the biggest beach area; chairs with umbrellas are limited
  • Minibars in the rooms have plenty of beverages but no snacks
  • Ordering room service could require several dial attempts
  • The authentic English pub has an odor that may turn off guests
  • Guests may be pressured to buy extra excursions
  • Some restaurants require reservations which can be hard to snag
  • Windsor Tower rooms are more likely to experience late-night noise
  • Connecting to Wi-Fi can be a challenge

Bottom Line
What was once known as the famous Balmoral Club back in the 1940s later became the 408-room Sandals Resort in 1995, where the motto is "Love is all you need." This resort has everything designed for couples and manages to impress upon arrival with Roman columns, statues, fountains, three levels of elegant accommodations, 10 distinct restaurants, and eight bars. Guests receive a slew of information at onset, including a schedule of both land and water activities and daily events, but many choose to relax at the beach or make use of one of two main pool bars to drink and mingle. Head to the offshore island for an easy excursion -– a boat leaves every hour and there’s a Jamaican restaurant (included) and cabanas for napping. It’s not all romance though; the resort does attract its fair share of partiers -– hence the rowdy Piano Bar and English Cricketeer Pub which are both open till the wee hours.

Cons

  • Long transfer from airport
  • Rooms near entertainment can be noisy

For guests seeking a laid-back all-inclusive in a less crowded area of Jamaica, Sandals South Coase is a beautiful, secluded option. Spacious and inviting, the resort is surrounded by 500 acres of wilderness preserve, making it quiet and very private.
